Where Did You Get That?

PENS

Avoid the cheap, light weight K-Mart and Warehouse 60cm x 60cm pen panels. Because they are so light and low, a rabbit can easily lift & shove them as well as jump over them.

Westley’s World

HEAVY DUTY PLAYPENS are best. They come in various panel sizes, widths & heights. Generally speaking as a buns indoor bedroom aim for 8 panel & preferably 10 panel. Minimum of 80cm high but taller if your bun is a keen jumper.

Available from - Trade Me, Treasure Box, Hercules Store, Paktec

Westley’s World

YOURS DROOLLY PLAYPENS (above) Panels are 60cm wide & come in various heights up to 122cm. They are all 8 panels in width. You can join two together to make a larger space. They pack down quite small so also ideal as emergency housing.

Available from - Pet stores & Trade Me Often come up second hand on Trade Me & Marketplace, Mitre10, PetWorkz

PAWZ PLAYPENS - similar to Yours Droolly. Available in 3 heights 30 ", 36" & 42" plus with or without a door from Trade Me.

DOG CRATES

Various sizes available. The largest size at 122cm-125cm long is the best size. These make excellent emergency housing & recovery pens following surgery.

Available from - Trade Me, Treasure Box, Trade Tested, Pet Stores, Mitre10, PetWorkz

South Island options to reduce shipping costs.

Invercargill

PetSmartNZ - Sturdy taller pens up to 105cm tall.

WALK IN RUNS

Westley’s World

CHICKEN RUNS OR DOG ENCLOSURES, above - These come in various sizes. Some are chain link; which is stronger, and some plastic coated chicken mesh; which is not adequate to safely house rabbits without additional weldmesh added to it. Both will need additional weld mesh around the lower section of the run to make it more secure and cover up gaps. (Approx 1m high all around the enclosure). The Outdoor Setups file explains the modifications.

Available from - Trade Me, Treasure Box, Hercules store, TSB living, Trade Tested, Living Culture

RUBY STAY HOME - below. These runs are more expensive but are excellent quality which don't require the same modifications as the others. They can also have panels added to increase their size when funds allow. They would be best with a secure solid roof. Masterton SPCA use these runs and absolutely swear by them.

Available from - direct from Ruby Stay Home

OMLET & ZIPPI - below.

Available from - Appletons. They also come up second hand on Trade Me & Marketplace

KITSET BUILDINGS - below.

This company makes some wonderful walk in enclosures as well as solid, well built wooden sheds.

HOUSING

Traditional hutches do not meet minimum housing requirements and are not suitable as the only shelter option, however they can be customised/made over to be used as enrichment elements. They should never be used as stand alone housing, ever.
This ‘standard’ hutch was donated to me in poor condition. The internal divider was removed and it has has a new floor, front and back. In addition, a sheet of ply has been screwed to the roof to extend it and improve insulation. The Zippi tunnel and its connector are from Appletons.

The Original Westley’s World Snuggle Box meets minimum housing/shelter requirements. This can be bought from WW and the plans are also included in the link so you can build your own.

The EcoFlex could be a good housing option also -

New wooden dog kennels can often be converted as part of a set up.

Sally Wheater’s Cougar Kennels + Zippi tunnel set up

Cougar Kennels (Auckland) will custom make their product if requested. The owner of this set up is Sally Wheat. Sally says - “I recently bought a Cougar Kennel which the seller made to order for me with modifications. It's super-strong, weatherproof and insulated in the sleeping area so stays cool in summer. With a washing line in the middle of my small lawn I don't have space for a walk in dog run so this set-up works well for me. My bun was really happy with the kennel right from the start and loves spending time in there (I've added barley straw and a step-stool in the outer part (and obviously he has water there too) and he has a litter tray inside). I don't have to worry about it blowing over in a storm or falling apart. I've opened the door a few times on hot sunny days to check the temperature, and it's still cool inside. The guy from Cougar Kennels was very helpful. My one cost $900.”

Old Plastic kennels can be adapted for use as enrichment elements. The one below has had a mezzanine floor added. The mezzanine has a ‘trap door’ to the lower level and multiple entry/exit holes downstairs.

TUNNELS
- lots of ideas in the the Pens / Enclosures/ Tunnels / Pen Toppers file.

Appletons sell the Zippi tunnel and pen system, below. These are really strong and secure. Use for joining outdoor housing and runs together. The tunnels may not be big enough for very large rabbits. I’ve seen a 5.5kg Flemish fit through them with no issues.

Other tunnels for enrichment are great for adding to your rabbit's space for fun.

Available from - Trade Me, Pet Stores, Kmart & The Warehouse. Look for cat tunnels.

CARDBOARD ENRICHMENT SYSTEMS

Available from - Kmart. Usually sold as cat tunnel or play systems.
